Data Storage Converter

Convert digital storage units — bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. Supports both decimal (SI) and binary (IEC) definitions used in operating systems.

Data Storage Unit Definitions

Byte (B)
8 bits. The basic unit of digital information.
Kilobyte (KB)
1,000 bytes (SI) or 1,024 bytes (binary/KiB).
Megabyte (MB)
1,000 KB (SI) = 1,000,000 bytes.
Gigabyte (GB)
1,000 MB (SI). Hard drives are sold in GB.
Terabyte (TB)
1,000 GB. Used for large drives and cloud storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show less space in Windows?

Windows uses binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes) while drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). A 1 TB drive shows ~931 GiB in Windows.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB (megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes (decimal/SI). MiB (mebibyte) = 1,048,576 bytes (binary/IEC). The difference grows larger at higher units.
