Data Storage Converter
Convert digital storage units — bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. Supports both decimal (SI) and binary (IEC) definitions used in operating systems.
Common Data Storage Conversions
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 KB (decimal) | 1,000 bytes |
| 1 MB | 1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes |
| 1 GB | 1,000 MB |
| 1 TB | 1,000 GB |
| 1 KiB (binary) | 1,024 bytes |
| 1 MiB | 1,024 KiB = 1,048,576 bytes |
| 1 GiB | 1,024 MiB |
| 1 TiB | 1,024 GiB |
| 1 GB (decimal) | 0.931 GiB (binary) |
Data Storage Unit Definitions
- Byte (B)
- 8 bits. The basic unit of digital information.
- Kilobyte (KB)
- 1,000 bytes (SI) or 1,024 bytes (binary/KiB).
- Megabyte (MB)
- 1,000 KB (SI) = 1,000,000 bytes.
- Gigabyte (GB)
- 1,000 MB (SI). Hard drives are sold in GB.
- Terabyte (TB)
- 1,000 GB. Used for large drives and cloud storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show less space in Windows?
Windows uses binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes) while drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). A 1 TB drive shows ~931 GiB in Windows.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes (decimal/SI). MiB (mebibyte) = 1,048,576 bytes (binary/IEC). The difference grows larger at higher units.
